If you like to play with beta software, Adobe opened a public beta on 27 May for Dreamweaver CS4, Fireworks CS4, and Soundbooth CS4. These are betas so don’t expect them to be perfect, use them on production stuff, etc. To access the betas you need to either (i) have a serial number for the stand-alone CS3 product or (ii) have a CS3 suite that includes that product. Judging from the nasty comments in the Dw forums, Adobe is having some issues when it comes to figuring out which serial numbers qualify and which ones don’t. Par for the course, I’d say.
I haven’t decided if I’m going to play with the betas or not. You can read the Adobe web site for the details of what’s in these releases but there are a few things that caught my eye.
- Dw
- Related Files. This is supposed to identify all the files (CSS, JavaScript, XML, etc) that are associated with your current web page. Saves you some hunt-and-peck time.
- Code Navigator. Similar to the related files except this identifies all the code sources that impact your current selection.
- CSS best practices. Similar to the previous but this shows you applicable CSS styles. You also get tool-tips with "jargon-free English" explanations of CSS principles.
- Sb
- Multi-track editing. If this means more than a left and right channel, and allows you to stich audio files end-to-end, that would be great. This was my one major complaint with Sb CS3 and the one for which Adobe had no answer as Audition 3 is Windows-only. While I don’t need a full DAW, I do need multi-track for what I have in mind.
I haven’t used Fw so the few new features didn’t impress me one way or the other. I am going to be working on a new site and thought I might give the CS3 version a try there.
