Update: The pool table has left the building and is on it’s way to a new home! If you were interested, I sorry but it’s gone.

How would you like to have your very own pool table? How about if I said it was free? Yes, free. If you are in the Phoenix area, we have a pool table looking for a new owner. This is a dark laminate covered pool table with black and gold trim. It measures 8′ 6" x 4′ 9" (exterior) and 7′ 6" x 3′ 9" (interior bumper to bumper). The table was recently re-felted. It comes with…

1 full set of balls

1 partial set of balls (missing 7 and 13)

1 dark wood rack, gold trimed

2 cue balls

5 cue sticks (2 new, 3 older, extra cue tips included)

1 bridge

1 dark cherry wood stand with four (4) cork-bottomed cup holders for your favorite beverage-of-choice

several cubes of blue cue chalk

a cylinder of hand chalk (fits on a peg on the stand)

Did I mention it was free? All you have to do is come and get it, or arrange to have someone move it for you (which is what we did). The table can be disassembled and it’s a straight shot across a tile floor and out our front door. Our home is a single story so there are no stairs to worry about.

So what’s the catch? It’s free so there must be a catch, right? First, it isn’t showroom new; there are a few small nicks in the laminate. Second, it needs new pockets. The table has pockets but they are the wrong size and have a tendency to slide down. And third, this table has a single piece of slate rather than a three-piece arrangement. That gets you a beautiful playing surface with no seams but it weighs around 600 pounds.

One characteristic of the Internet is the huge amount of flotsam and jetsam out there. You find an interesting site like flickr or LiveJournal and settle in. A few monthls later you find a site like blogger or WordPress and hey!, they’re better. And then you need a blog for school and the instructor wants you to use a specific site with a specific name (like this). And mnteverest.net is cool because Everest is amazing so you need to register at that site (which I did but don’t bother sending me email there). Before you know it, a couple of years has passed and you’re registered at two dozen sites and abandoned just as many.

Welcome to the 21st century’s version of urban sprawl.

For the last few years, I have my blog on LiveJournal and for the most part, I’ve been a happy camper there. In a bid to cut down the amount of sprawl I contribute to the Internet, I’ve decided to set up a WordPress-powered blog on my website. This lets me use the flexible WordPress engine and use Adobe Contribute CS3. (And in case you were wondering, LiveJournal is not compatible with Contribute.) Since I already pay a yearly fee to host my website, I figure I might as well make use of the space. It would also motivate me to do something with my site; I’ve been neglecting it for the last eight months or so.

Note: This was one of the few posts on a class blog and it’s one of the few I’m going to “transplant” to my new blog. The original post was 6 April 2008. I should explain that the folks in question stood between my teenage son and a completed project for a photography class. I’m over it now.

There are just days when you just want to slap people!

For our latest photo assignment, my son wanted to buy a video game. The plan was to go to our local game store, browse the titles, buy a game, bring it home, put it in the Xbox and play it. At each point in the process, we’d take pictures. Easy enough, right? Wrong.

The local game store is called Play-n-Trade. Located here in Anthem, they have a good selection of games (including titles for consoles that came out when I was a kid). They have helpful people behind the counter. They also won’t let you take pictures of or in their shop. Why, you ask? The answer is because “it’s private property” and if we took pictures, they would “confiscate them.”

Does that sound like BS or what?!? We are talkin’ photos for a college assignment, not a magazine cover!

At least they didn’t claim it was for “security.” Given today’s post-9/11 mindset security is the standard answer for everything. You can take photos outside a stadium because of security. Nor of airports, court buildings, public landmarks, and – god forbid! – you should put your pics on a website to share with family and friends (all 8 billion of them)! And they didn’t claim it would be copyright or trademark infringement, another common reason. Did you know the architecture (facade) of a building or a landmark can be copyright? That means no photos without someone’s written permission – and a cut of the profits while you’re at it! Have you ever thought how assinine that one is? Everyone can see it right there on the streetside! For the record, this store’s architecture looks like just about every other strip mall in Phoenix.

So, to all you would-be photographers out there take note: you take a picture and we might have to shoot ya!
